Pulcheria

399 - 453

A fervent Christian, the daughter of Arcadius spent the greater portion of her life working for the early Christian church and using her imperial title to this end. When Arcadius died prematurely in 408 she was left in de facto charge over the empire as her brother, Theodosius II was still a minor. At the time he married, however, Eudocia, demanded that she withdraw from her high-profile public role. While still keeping her title and retinue, she spent the next several decades in Alexandria continuing her work in the church. She returned to Constantinople upon the death of Theodosius at which time she presided over the succession of Marcian to whom she agreed to marry symbolically in an act to legitimize his accession.
